Dancer and choreographer Juana Varela experiments with plastic objects of large dimensions that are moved by the turbines of fans. In this proposal, the reflection of a woman's life is closely linked to her development and it encapsulates femininity, beauty, but also repressed emotions in disguise.

At the end, they all meet in a common location and participate in a disorderly choreography. How will the performance end? What will happen to the letters? Do they spell words? Reminiscences of Hidrogenesse and La Casa Azul. Techno-pop with very explicit, almost punk, lyrics; and represented by iconography that drinks equally from "Superpop" (old-fashioned teen magazine) and the Instagram culture. Songs to break the dance floor, ironic "hits", laughing at posers and choruses which make it impossible not to sing along. Mendoza is an adaptation of Shakespeare's Macbeth in 1910 revolutionary Mexico.

A story of ambition, violence and power; more up to date than ever. The play takes us through the turbulent years at the beginning of the 20th century in this Central American country. A canteen, six actors and three actresses comprise the ingredients in the staging of a play that draws from the dramaturgy of Juan Rulfo and Elena Garro.

Hortzmuga Teatroa

Plaça Hort dels Corders Castelló de la Plana

A street show suitable for all audiences. An ideal performance to dream together because the story of "Jule", a tenant who refuses to leave her flat in a half-demolished building, is made of the same substance as hope. In addition, there are other characters such as the night security guard, who is constantly daydreaming and in search of a clan to belong to; or the granddaughter who let her dreams slip and no longer remembers her chimeras. It is a crossing of stories, seasoned with humour and fantasy, that reveals family relationships and quests for wishes to come true. "Jule" is about a woman, but it is also about action and active participation of the audience.

The streets are full and classrooms are empty. Students protest because of the decadence of public education. A student in her last year of school before university does attend class. There is nobody else, only her teacher, who will make the most of this moment to teach her a special lesson. Xavier Puchades adapts the Chilean text by Guillermo Calderón to the Spanish situation comparing two generational realities: the teacher embodied by Àngel Fígols, born during the dictatorship and educated during the transition to democracy; and that of the girl, a student embodied by María Andrés, who has lived her whole life in a democracy.

Every three seconds a human being becomes a refugee. These are the chilling figures from a UN report. It is a reality that still exists even if it has disappeared from the media spotlight. It is a reality that Europe is trying to elude by looking away. A reality that is condemning thousands of people, who are fleeing from war, hunger and fear, to exodus. Barro rojo is a story of a homosexual man who is locked up in a concentration camp and, later on, in a prison for being gay. It is the time of Hitler in Europe and Franco in Spain, which were so akin to each other. The narrator is the man's nephew, who at times becomes the leading character. A story within a story. There is drama, laughter, a cabaret and tears, but, above all else, there is a need to review a cruel and painful past, so we remember that thanks to its victims, we can enjoy all of our rights and freedoms today.

This dance show is based on an analysis of two popular phenomena on Youtube: dance covers (the re-enactment of the choreography of an original music video) and tutorials about different yoga techniques. This is a performance with a social and anthropological base in which the artist uses her movements to reflect on the social value of a "like". She does so by addressing the theme of prestige and how to gain it (and at what price) in our digital society of today. "Likes" is a fresh take on the exposure and position of our bodies in the digital era.

24th of March, 2015. A Germanwings commercial aircraft crashes in the French Alps. 150 people on board lose their lives. Amongst them, Andreas Lubitz, the co-pilot. The investigation comes to an end and blames him for the accident, making a point of his depression. According to Albert Lladó, who at the time worked for the digital edition of the newspaper "La Vanguardia", the case had been closed unsoundly. He turned to theatre for the answers that journalism had denied him.

That was the birth of "Ícaro", a play that draws an analogy between the falling of the aeroplane and that of a Europe blinded by ambition.

It is the third time in a row that Marta Pazos participates in this Festival. She does so with an irreverent version of Shakespeare's classic. In her own words, this work "talks, above everything else, about the freedom of choice. To choose where to get lost, who to love, what to do with your body. About identity, about looking, about other ways of reading bodies. Building an open space for sexual, corporal and gender diversity. A forest with more flexible limits. Culbuto

Cie. Mauvais Coton

Plaça Ajuntament Alicante

A solo act of balance and intelligence by Vincent Martinez. The swings of a man trying to keep a frantic rhythm that constantly challenges him. A show appropriate for all ages. "Culbuto" plays with the limits of what we´re capable of, often flying over the audience. Proving, furthermore, that through a circus turn and a simple device (a machine that consists of a semicircle with a pole that naturally tends towards imbalance), it is possible to tickle life. There's only one truth: everything is moving all the time.

Agnés Mateus i Quim Tarrida

Teatre Arniches Alicante

A vibrant performance by Agnés Mateus (leading role in the monologue) and Quim Tarrida to give consideration to the contradictions in the world: protests and demonstrations until the door closes. And afterwards, we do the opposite: passivity, indifference... A play that depicts the raw silence towards matters of importance like sexist killing (or feminicide), patriarchy, violence against women... The script, via comedy, hijacks this abuse and these taboo words, using them to cast all that "weight" of inaction on the middle of the stage. As its authors say: "life should blow up in our faces more often".

Three friends return to a beach where they once were happy. It is the middle of November. There they relive that summer and they share their doubts about the present and the future. Their lives are no longer like they were in those blissful days and neither are they. Is it possible to recover the happiness once lost simply by revisiting those places where we felt it? Amongst yoga postures with names of desserts, nods to Game of Thrones, an alcoholic woman that wants to push her daughter off a cliff or Instagram likes; this play attempts to answer that question. Or perhaps not.

Fémina

Maracaibo Teatro

Plaça del Col·legi del Patriarca Valencia

Emotion, truth, amusement and reflection. "Fémina. Las mujeres mueven el mundo" is a beautiful and visceral song that depicts the power women have held throughout history to move the world. This theatrical metaphor serves as a means to address issues such as sexism, body objectification, wage gap, sisterhood, patriarchy or gender-based violence. With a majority of women (coming from different disciplines) making up its cast, "Fémina" puts together a current, dynamic and rich picture that aims to make us think about the energy that has made this world turn since ancient times.

What happens when two parents get separated? What role do their children play from then on? How do the children experience and adapt to their new lives? Júlia, the main character, holds the answers, or, at least, she'll suddenly have to figure them when she becomes the only link that connects her parents. At the same time, circumstances force her to change in an environment that is no longer the one she is used to. New relationships, couples that break up and others that get together. This is a comedy about a web of family relationships from the perspective of a girl.

Four solo choreographed performances executed by three dancers (Maynor Chávez, Sara López Vicente and Eduardo Ramírez) who give life to four characters, analysed according to a perspective of relationships of power. The king, who epitomises the overthrowing of power; his courtesan, representing the creation of interests; the bastard, who embodies simplicity; and the queen mother that personifies a pathetic degradation, make up the foursome under the direction of Yoshua Cienfuegos. A critical view that poses physical and performing challenges when it comes to the nuances of each of these personalities, which clearly evolve towards an erosion of their bonds.

This worldwide premiere at "Tercera Setmana" Festival is a rollercoaster of emotions with the single voice of its main character: a retired actress who presents a mosaic of funny and traditionalist situations ranging from comedy to tragedy. Due to her profession, she addresses the audience with a careful language, even poetic, which can also descend to the most rugged and vulgar speech. We know not whether she speaks from her own experience since the picture she paints has the widest range of emotions: fear, falling in love, threats, judgements, aggressions…

Final del Torneig de Dramatúrgia Valenciana

Teatre Rialto Valencia

A boxing ring where punches are swapped for scenic texts and boxers for actores. 8 playwrights from Alicante, Castellon and Valencia will come face to face wielding their works against each other from May 21st till June 12th.

The process is simple. Each of the eight contestants will measure their skill against another in groups of two. Each one will present their own 40 minute text that will be read by two professional actors/actresses. The audience, through their votes, will have to decide who gets through to the next qualifying round of the contest. In the end, only two contestants will reach the grand final that will take place at Teatro Rialto in Valencia as part of the "Tercera Setmana" Festival.

The contestants will be Josi Alvarado, Pascual Carbonell, Jerónimo Cornelles, Paula Llorens, Adrián Novella, Javier Sahuquillo, Ruth Sancho and Núria Vizcarro. Actor and dramatist Xavo Giménez will take on the role of master of ceremonies.

The Valencian Dramaturgy Tournament is the result of the partnership and support of Institut Valencià de Cultura (Valencian Institute of Culture), SGAE Foundation, Sala OFF and Tercera Setmana Festival.

Millions of migrants cross sea and land in pursuit of their dreams with the vivid memory of uprooting and fear. This gestural-theatre piece is the visual and corporal fruit of a comprehensive investigation about how to translate, into movement or poetic images, the stories of real or imaginary people who once had to abandon their birthplace striving for a better future. Worldwide premiere at "Tercera Setmana" Festival. Also a first for "Circo Gran Fele", because, after countless group projects, this is a début work as a more personal and intimate solo performance. A Shakespearean clown, in an ordinary corner standing before the world as a small street performer who, nevertheless, uses all the acting technique available: gestures, silences and rhythm. Trío Petrakis-López-Chemirani

Jardines del Palau, Parc del turia Valencia

Stelios Petrakis, Efrén López y Bijan Chemirani make up a trio of musicians with a Mediterranean-Iranian base. Greek performer, Petrakis, specialises in Cretan instruments, the Valencian Efrén López has extensive experience playing multiple instruments and Chemirani is consummate virtuoso of the zarb, typical instrument in traditional Persian music. Together they work like a cohesive melody that will carry the audience to a nearby sea with a touch of oriental influence. A sound that will reach the heart with ease because it does not need decoding despite its enormous cultural background. The setting, in the gardens of the Palau de la Música and the time, at night, will contribute to the embarking on the metaphorical journey.

Stelio Petrakis, Efrén López y Bijan Chemirani

Stelio Petrakis is a Greek multi-instrumentalist and a luthier. His musical compositions are strongly influenced by the music of his birthplace, Crete, and by other sounds (Istanbul, Iran, etc.) that he has studied for many years. He has been involved in collaborations with Manolo García and Roos Daily, among others. The Valencian Efrén López plays several instruments (the hurdy-gurdy, the rubab, the laouto,...); has founded groups such as "L'Ham de Foc", "Aman Aman" and "Sabir"; and has participated in the recording of more than 60 records. Lastly, Bijan Chemirani is the youngest of a zarb-playing family saga. Also called tombak, it is the main percussion instrument of Iranian origin. Apart from this project, he also keeps an active career as a soloist and he directs a group called "Oneira".

De nuevo un instante tan breve

La Mecánica

Flumen Valencia

A musical, physical and object-based theatre. Three suited and booted men; contemporaries of Tati, Beckett and Keaton; come out from their boxes. They interact with each other before some obstacles (such as planks that defy gravity, different-sized cubes, literal swarms of pieces of paper that fall onto them...), which they overcome through refined virtuosity, sense of humour and, of course, accurate acrobatics. In addition, there are sporadic words and unexpected sounds that are kept in step with body movements. What they express is universally poetic, since it activates the audience's imagination, their laughter and their anguish in this chaotic universe that is so easily recognisable.

De nuevo un instante tan breve is a co-production of La Mecànica and the emblematic French company Théatre du Mouvement.

Social conventions mark our day-to-day lives. It doesn't matter that some of them are uncalled for. They are present everywhere: in the supermarket, in the queue to the cinema or when we bump into a neighbour in the elevator. Often, we don't say anything but we mean everything with a subtle nod. They are automatic and subconscious ways of communication that we use. Raised eyebrows, smiles, pats on the back or not staring at other people for too long.

"Nowhere in particular", another world premiere at Tercera Setmana, gives this topic some thought: about how those standards end up making us who we are, defining us.

Family is presented as the narrative focal point. Even if, instead of calling it a family, we could call it a herd. Family as a stronghold, as a place of protection, armed and shielded, which conditions human beings and creating what seems like an obligation to belong. In this work, questions such as how to tear the stronghold apart have an answer: through uncontrollable eventualities. In their words: "family is good, mummy loves you, daddy loves you, your brother loves you, have children, many children, lots of debt, buy a house, buy a car, stop being who you are to become a family".

States use forgetfulness in pursuit of a supposed political stability. The recent history of our own country is a good example of this, and this performance takes advantage of it. It uses the figure of a "resurrection man", who unearths shame and truth, hidden in words, as the guiding motif. It is an act about the anthropology of conflicts that have been obscured by official rhetoric throughout history. The body and its answers play an important role in a show that blends corporal, poetic and documentary theatre; and, the value of impartial speech.

Teatre Micalet Valencia

A freestyle version made for physical theatre and expressive dancing inspired by Shakespeare's Hamlet. Jose Manuel Mudarra directs a group of actors that leave it all on the court by playing the eternal, philosophical, ethical and artistic values of this great classic. Vengeance, betrayal, disloyalty, power, desire, madness, honour... The main character's torment is a call to action: to live or to die? To surrender or to fight? The biomechanical movements in the scene, along with singing and the performance, confer a great energetic power. This isn't the umpteenth interpretation of the drama. It's a ground-breaking shift in which metaphor seizes power.

Niño de Elche & Israel Galván

Teatre Principal de Valencia Valencia

Coplas mecánicas (Mechanical Coplas)

Niño de Elche had already been on stage with Israel Galván, collaborating in some of their shows. But, for the first time, they have thought out and created a combined show which will reach "Tercera Setmana" Festival right after their premiere at Sonar Festival. They will be closing this third edition in Teatre Principal, in Valencia. These "mechanical coplas" manage to take flamenco music to another dimension, and they do so thanks to the coupling of the dancing and tapping of Galván and the voice of Niño de Elche, with his "quejíos", his singing, his incredible onomatopoeias.

Niño de Elche + Israel Galván

If there is anything in common between these two artists, it must be the creative freedom that their works express. In addition, they share the unorthodox approach towards flamenco: always betting on emotion, feelings and curiosity as opposed to those who support an official doctrine of stagnation. One of the members of this duo has his voice and an explosive performance, and the other with his passionate and powerful dancing, which seem to have been choreographed in another planet. A pure avant-garde phylosophy but practical and sensible on the stage. They interpret flamenco in their own way, which is also a way of being "flamenco".
